Speaker Profile: Mandy Wiener

At a time when threats to democracy, accountability and personal safety are increasingly complex, the relationship between journalists and whistleblowers has never been more critical or more vulnerable. This presentation will explore the essential role that whistleblowers play in exposing corruption, organised crime and abuses of power and how investigative journalists act as trusted intermediaries who verify, contextualise and amplify those disclosures in the public interest. It will examine the risks faced by both parties, from digital surveillance and intimidation to legal retaliation and physical threats and consider the ethical responsibilities that underpin these collaborations. The address will also reflect on the importance of trust, secure communication practices, protective frameworks and cross-sector cooperation in safeguarding those who speak out, arguing that strengthening the partnership between journalists and whistleblowers is not only vital to investigative reporting but fundamental to building more transparent, accountable and resilient societies.
