Chantal Waldeck

I am a registered clinical psychologist over 20 years’ experience in the field of forensic psychology and psychiatry. I am currently a board member of AFATAP since 2021 and have been actively involved in AFATAP events since the first founders meeting in 2019.

My qualifications include a BA (cum laude), BA Honours (cum laude) and Masters in Clinical Psychology from the Northwest University: Potchefstroom Campus. My love and passion for working in the field of forensics motivated me to pursue my career in a specialized psychiatric institution with a focus on forensic psychiatry. I am currently the Senior Clinical Psychologist and Psychological Services Manager at the forensic unit at Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital where I have gained extensive experience in the area of forensic assessments and threat and risk management. I am in addition a joint appointee at the Department of Psychiatry in the School of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand where I am involved in the teaching, supervision and training of psychology and medical doctor trainees. My previous experience includes working in correctional services where I was involved in providing therapeutic services and continuous threat and risk assessment to incarcerated offenders. I also obtained valuable experience in the academic field, being a lecturer at the University of Johannesburg for a period of 6 years where my areas of expertise included forensic psychology, psychopathology, neuropsychology, developmental psychology and psychometric assessment. I have contributed to the knowledge base of forensic work within psychology, by being a national trainer in several psychometric instruments and provide specialized training in the area of forensic psychology. My academic interests have lead me to literary work in which I have contributed to a chapter in a South African textbook focused on criminal matters and I continue to contribute to academia and research within this field. I have also obtained specialized training from international experts in the field of threat assessment and risk management which I use on a continuous basis in my current occupation.
