About the workshop

Professional standards and guidelines for violence prevention and intervention in various fields highlight the need for the rapid identification and mitigation of risk. To assist this process, we developed the Aid for Violence Risk Triage or AVRT.
The AVRT provides a structure that can be used to sort, prioritize, and respond when concerns arise that someone may pose a risk for violence, including such things as identifying when it is advisable or even necessary to refer a person for comprehensive violence risk (threat) assessment.
The AVRT was developed over the past 10 years based on extensive research, feedback from experts, and consideration of the relevant law.
The overarching goal of this workshop is to enhance the evidence-based practice of participants concerning violence risk triage using the AVRT. In the first half of the workshop, the specific goal is to enhance participants’ understanding of critical issues concerning the process of violence risk triage.
In the second half, the specific goal is to build foundational skills in the use of the AVRT through the completion of practice cases.
The workshop is designed for all professionals whose work may involve violence risk, including those working in criminal justice, security, victim services, forensic mental health, civil mental health, general health care, social services, human resources, occupational health and safety, and legal services.
