Acts of targeted violence rarely emerge as spontaneous events. Instead, they develop through interacting cognitive, emotional, and behavioral processes that unfold over time.
Understanding these dynamics requires moving beyond viewing violence as a single incident and toward recognizing escalation as a developmental architecture.
This presentation introduces an interdisciplinary framework that integrates neurocognitive science, psychology, and behavioral threat assessment to explain how escalation pathways develop. Participants will examine how threat perception within the brain’s limbic system, combined with stress-related neurochemistry, can amplify emotional salience, rumination, and grievance consolidation. When these internal processes interact with social stressors and environmental pressures, they may produce observable behavioral markers that signal progression toward violence.
The session also demonstrates how structured mind mapping can be used as a visualization method for identifying escalation patterns, clustering behavioral indicators, and revealing intervention opportunities within complex cases. By externalizing information spatially, practitioners can move beyond fragmented incident reporting toward dynamic pattern recognition.
Positioned within a broader violence prevention and public safety framework, this approach supports multidisciplinary collaboration and capacity building across diverse environments, including community safety initiatives, school protection, extremism prevention, and institutional threat assessment contexts relevant throughout Africa.
